Minimum Wage in Minneapolis

Our Small Businesses: 

SWBA coordinated with fellow Minneapolis area small business associations to produce a video that highlights businesses in the city, provides a personal look at their owners, and talks about the positive impact their small business has on the surrounding community. The goal of the video is to connect with the public and show that our business owners are good people who are working hard and have a very positive impact on our communities.

Leadership has communicated the desire to have elected officials and city staff engage in a two-way dialog with business owners and their employees regarding the impact of a city-specific minimum wage. City staff have explicitly asked associations like the SWBA to share financial impact information with them so they have Minneapolis-sourced data from businesses. We surveyed businesses, and have produced a report based upon survey responses. See the report using the link below:

Overview Timeline

  • May 2017: City Staff to Present Recommendation to Council Based on Listening Session Feedback
  • JUNE 6: Draft ordinance presented at Committee of the Whole 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 6.
  • JUNE 22: Public Hearing: 3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 22 on the draft municipal minimum wage ordinance.
  • JUNE 23: The final draft ordinance will be presented to the council’s Committee of the Whole 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 28. Any final revisions or amendments could be entertained before a final engrossed copy is prepared and submitted to the full City Council.
  • JUNE 30: The full City Council will act on the final municipal minimum wage ordinance at its regular meeting 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 30.
